Biography

Meet Declan Hetherington, a Scientist 1 at Cyprotex, Evotec. With a BSc in Chemistry and a passion for science, Declan's journey began as a Laboratory Assistant in a COVID-19 Laboratory. Embracing the fast-paced environment, he quickly climbed the ladder to become a Laboratory Supervisor, leading a team of seven. His experience in late-stage drug development honed his precision and GxP
skills, but he missed the dynamic setting he once thrived in. Joining Cyprotex's Physical Chemistry team, Declan found his stride in early-stage drug discovery, where he works on solubility and pKa, making a tangible impact on people's lives through drug discovery. As a responsible and enthusiastic scientist, he ensures the smooth running of solubility assays and contributes to continuous improvements, embracing a culture that values growth and employee development. Declan is proud to be part of Cyprotex's scientific community, appreciating the freedom and opportunities that allow him to excel in his unique way.

Interests & Experience

Declan is dedicated to delivering top-quality scientific measurements and continuously improving services based on scientific advancements. With successful client relationships and long-term contracts, Declan's team understands the importance of every measurement they make. Outside of
work, Declan finds solace in outdoor activities like cycling and camping, often combining both in bike packing adventures. A passionate football fan, he enjoys watching Manchester City play and plays 5-a-side football with his colleagues. In quieter settings, Declan's creativity thrives, making him a valuable asset in the fast-paced laboratory environment. His commitment to innovation and scientific
excellence drives him both professionally and personally.

Improved Healthcare

The pharmaceutical industry is one of Cyprotex’s key customer markets. Cyprotex has developed its own high throughput systems to screen potential new drugs more efficiently and more rapidly – speeding up the time it takes for the drug discovery process and reducing costs for our customers.

Additionally, Cyprotex invests in many R&D projects. Many of these are focused in the field of in vitro toxicology where Cyprotex is helping to develop more clinically relevant models. The ultimate outcome of our research is to bring safer drugs to the market with the best chance of clinical success. Cyprotex is currently involved in the CiPA initiative where we play an active role in the evaluation of new testing methods for cardiac safety.

Reduction in Animal Testing

Ethical concerns over animal testing are growing. Within the cosmetics industry this has led to a ban on animal testing for any new cosmetic product or their ingredients. For new pharmaceuticals, preclinical toxicity testing in animals is still a requirement of the regulatory authorities due to the risk to human health. Cyprotex focuses its screening services and research activities on in vitro and in silico methods believing that these technologies will help to reduce and replace animal testing in the future.

Suppliers & Partners

Cyprotex expects all suppliers and partners to work towards and uphold the highest ethical and moral standards. The company will, if appropriate, consider the ethical record of potential new suppliers before entering into any agreement. The company reserve the right to withdraw from any agreement or other arrangement with any supplier or partner who is found to have acted in contravention of the spirit or principles of our own ethical policy.

More details on our ethical policy and code of conduct can be found here.
