Amgen’s CM process for a non-mAb protein
Biopharmaceutical pioneers like Amgen are implementing continuous manufacturing platforms for commercial lifecycle programs. They consider these innovations perfect for “high mix, low volume” plants — think diverse molecules produced in smart, small facilities.
In this case study spotlight, GMP implementation of a hybrid CM process has achieved:
- 80% less process media and buffer usage
- 15x more product per batch
- 45x higher process productivity
White Paper: Scaling Fed-Batch and Perfusion Antibody Production Processes in Geometrically Dissimilar Stirred Bioreactors
Researchers are providing new insights into scaling perfusion bioreactors which will support the biopharmaceutical industry’s adoption of continuous biomanufacturing. A team from ZHAW Zurich investigated the scaling of fed-batch and perfusion antibody production processes in geometrically dissimilar bioreactors. The team demonstrated the successful scaling of fed-batch and perfusion processes between geometrically dissimilar lab and pilot scale bioreactors.
In addition, they showed the perfusion process gave:
- 3x higher space-time yield than fed-batch (g/L/d)
- Stable glycan profiles from day 20 to day 50
- Higher uncharged variant of mAB
- >94% monomer content
The Impact on Expanding Access to Biopharmaceuticals: Higher productivity manufacturing will allow lower costs for antibody therapeutics and wider access to these crucial medicines without product quality being impacted.
